BIM CONSULTING AND TRAINING
ADDITIONAL / FUTURE AREAS OF BIM SERVICES
Architecture firms invest considerable resources in the creation of their first Building Information Models. As such projects mature, additional uses for the Model may present a delivery team with opportunities to leverage their investment in novel ways. Gridley Consultants can further support firms with the following services, should the need arise:
BIM PROJECT TEMPLATE CREATION
It is assumed that any firm has created several firm-specific documents, intended to be reused on future projects. These may include custom legends (partition, graphics, etc.), formatted schedules (door window, etc.), annotation styles, title blocks, etc. If these are to be re-used in a BIM workflow, they are most effective when incorporated into a template file for use on “day one” of a project. As any firm prepares for project kick-off, Gridley can translate existing standards into a firm-wide BIM template — formatting the above for general use on all future projects.
BIM EXECUTION PLAN
A BIM Execution Plan (BXP) is the central document used to set project BIM-usage expectations and to manage those expectations throughout the performance of the work. A firm's any BXP should outline (in clear terms) the firm's expectations for shareholder roles including: roles, responsibilities and authorities, project milestones in line with the project schedule, the BIM deliverable strategy, a survey and registration strategy (if needed). It will also document technical specifics for acceptable collaborative software, platform upgrade procedures, worksets, worksharing, and other processes for collaboration and modeling. The BXP must also describe expectations for individual model deliverables. It will set forth an agreed matrix of responsibilities (using the BIMForum 2015 BIM Specification as a template).
VIRTUAL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION SERVICES
It is common for projects with BIM delivery workflows (Architectural, Structural, and Mechanical, minimally) to lead integration with walk-through inspections of the common model, clash-detection inspections between models, and coordination reports based on clash detection findings and coordination meeting decisions. Gridley Consulting offers the experience and skill to aid a firm’s coordination meetings by providing the model walk-through services, inspections, and clash reports used to run fluid consultant (coordination) meetings.
VIRTUAL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION TRAINING
A firm may choose to dedicate staff time and training resources to providing in-house Virtual Design and Construction services. Gridley Consulting can train staff members in the common software and practices necessary to deliver these services.
ADDITIONAL BIM TRAINING TOPICS
The training outlined in standard agreements tend to be topics necessary to start delivery of the current firm projects. Should roles, designs, or intentions change, Gridley Consulting can support customized efforts with additional training in BIM-focused topics — for example, mass families, template creation, BIM standards, adaptive components, family libraries, quantity take-offs (cost estimating), etc.
PARAMETRIC DESIGN TRAINING TOPICS
Increasingly, contemporary design projects feature architectural elements whose form and panelization have been explored in manual iterations. Gridley Consulting training with current NURBS surface modeling tools to use parametric definitions to partially automate these explorations. Use of Rhinoceros and Grasshopper would be recommend, though Processing, Dynamo, or other tools can be demonstrated.
